At Woodson, Rusty Umberger earned 6 varsity letters (two each in football, basketball and baseball) and his senior year (1977) was selected Woodson’s Male Athlete of the Year. In football, Rusty started at quarterback as a sophomore and as a senior helped lead the Cavaliers to a #4 Metro ranking. Rusty was selected to the All State team and started at quarterback and punter in the Virginia All State All Star game. As a starting point guard on the basketball team, Rusty helped lead the Cavaliers to the district and regional finals and was named to the All-District and All-Region tournament teams. Rusty was invited to play in the Capital Classic all star game after his senior season. During his Cavalier baseball career, Rusty pitched four no hitters and 5 one hitters, struck out 10 or more batters in 11 games, and his 1.41 ERA was a Woodson record. . He was recruited to play in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Rusty attended the University of Connecticut on a full scholarship for football, where he earned four letters, was named All-Conference and All-East his senior year, andwas offered a tryout as punter by the New England Patriots.
