Jon FitzGerald

Boys Lacrosse
Induction Year: 2022
1988-2012

Jon FitzGerald, the first lacrosse head coach at Woodson, served as the Cavaliers head boys lacrosse coach for 25 years (1988-2012). A native of Long Island, New York, in 1981 Jon moved to Northern Virginia to teach in Fairfax County Public Schools and soon began coaching youth lacrosse. When Woodson was starting a lacrosse team and at the urging of his cousin, Jon applied for and was hired as head coach. From the beginning, Woodson boys lacrosse never had a losing season and with Jon at the helm the Cavaliers won 13 District, 4 Regional and 3 State championships. Currently, “Coach Fitz” is the #2 all-time winning coach in Virginia public high school history with 314 wins. In 2013 Jon was inducted into US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Potomac Chapter, for his accomplishments as a coach and player. As a lacrosse player at State University of New York Cortland (1980), Jon was a 2-time All-American and played in 2 NCAA Championship Finals. In 2005 Jon was inducted into the Paul D. Schreiber High School Athletic Hall of Fame for accomplishments as a high school athlete (football and lacrosse), a collegiate athlete and a high school coach. Coach Fitz continues to coach high school boys as an assistant and does not miss the massive responsibilities of being a head coach.
